In spite of numerous offers from other zoos to take a 2-year old male giraffe into their care, the Copenhagen Zoo opted to kill the baby giraffe due to concerns of inbreeding. You can google the gruesome details of how they did it (with an audience including children) because I don't believe I could type those words and not become physically sick.
When do we as humans become God? We hunt, kill magnificent animals to near extinction, then under the mask of saving them choose who lives and who dies all in the name of humanity. I say this with great sadness - we aren't worthy to share this planet with the beautiful animals on it.
Reading these articles, along with the thousands of others that pass my desk each day, leave me with such a sad sinking sinking feeling that sometimes I want to bury my head and pretend it's not happening. But it is. And I cant. And you can't either. We cannot save everything or make a difference everywhere, but we can where we live. We can donate our time, support good organizations, ban ones like the Copenhagen Zoo, sign petitions, call our congressman(woman), write letters, protest, and let our voices be heard. Because those who need us don't have one.
I keep the following saying on my writing desk so it greets me each morning:
Be the change you wish to see in the world.......Gandhi
